Sensory Issues

Ever heard of sensory issues?

I hadn't either before I married Nick.

Well in Nick's definition sensory issues are "being hyper-aware of your body and it's surroundings."

He gets very fixated on how things are touching his body. Like, for example, in bed at night he is constantly fidgeting. I ask him what's wrong and he is either complaining about how the pillow is not supporting his neck right, or the blanket is touching his leg the wrong way, or he's got to be one arms length in from the edge of the bed,

or my favorite,

there is too much air on his back.

Yep, you did read that correctly. It's actually quite adorable.

I remember when we were dating and he told me he could never use his pinkies to do anything. The mere thought of it sends shivers up his spine. Now, it makes much more sense. It's another one of his sensory issues.

Do you have sensory issues? If so, please leave it in the comments.

  1. Oh this humors me. Not because your hubby has sensory issues but because I am an occupational therapist that works in pediatrics and have MANY kids on my caseload with sensory issues. And these sound all too familiar!! If everyone truly understood sensory input/needs/issues everyone that reads your blog should comment on this post because we all have quirky little issues! Me for example: I am auditory defensive, meaning certain sounds really irritate me. I hate the sound of the vaccuum cleaner (the hubby's chore!) and the sound of the bathroom fan is awful! Also school cafeterias during lunch.....ugh...its toooo loud!! Tell your hubby I understand him completely! :)

  2. Hmm, it sounds like I might have sensory issues! I have to fidget for quite awhile to get comfortable. Glad to know I'm not a total weirdo! :-)

  3. Love your cute outfit! That cardi is adorable! I don't have sensory issues, but when my oldest was 2 they thought he might be autistic (he's not) so they had him in several therapies...one was for sensory. It was interesting to learn it's a real issue that many people struggle with!

  5. Never heard of that! Wild! Although now that I say that, there is one thing that I cannot stand and that is sleeping WITHOUT something covering me. I need something, a blanket (a sheet is too light) or a duvet, even on a hot summer night. I NEED to have something heavy on top of me.
OH that sounded baaaaad. haha...A heavy BLANKET.

  6. my son does - he can't stand tags from his clothes touching him, and often his long sleeved shirts have to be pushed up on his arms because he can't stand the way they feel on his arms.

  10. I have sensory issues! I can't stand to touch sand, raw lumber, dust, chalk, chalkboards or cardboard (or a brown paper bag)ew ew ew EW!!! I also used to be quite picky about the way clothes fit me. I couldn't stand to have anything at my natural waist. I used to tell my mom that long sleeve shirts and turtlenecks were "choking me" Not sure when the clothing changed but I can layer with the best of them now and love the feeling of security a scarf around my neck gives me! My sensory issues overlap with food textures as well... should I get an occupational therapist yet? ;)
